Abstract

[Also in Division B5] A mixing head for the formation of a band of polyurethane foam on a conveyor belt has an outlet large enough to allow of the required flow rate at a velocity low enough to prevent air intrapment, and a restriction comprising smaller parallel tubes 6 subdividing the outlet tube 2 to ensure that the outlet is full over its whole cross-section. The conveyor belt is unconfined so that the foam can expand freely as at 5. In order to obtain uniform velocity and distribution of the mixture 4 and promote its flow especially along a horizontal conveyor the tubes may be adjusted so that they are nearer the conveyor or one side of the outlet than the other in order to submerge them in the emerging liquid; the tubes at the centre or at one side may be smaller than the others. Conveniently the outlet may be 4 inches in diameter and the smaller tubes “ inch, and positioned # inch from the conveyor. The parallel passages may be a sheet metal honeycomb structure.
