Abstract

A cylinder lubricant for engines with separate cylinder and crank-shaft lubrication comprises one or more lubricating oils, a dispersed alkaline earth metal salt and/or hydroxide and at least one oil-soluble polymer having carboxyl groups, carboxylic anhydride groups, hydroxyl groups, epoxy groups and/or nitrogen-containing groups, which polymers may be considered to result from polymerization of olefinically unsaturated compounds. Alkaline earth metal salts specified are carbonates and those of aliphatic and aromatic carboxylic acids and hydroxycarboxy-lic acids and aliphatic and aromatic sulphonic acids; naphthenates being preferred. An exhaustive list of suitable polymers is given which embraces polymers derived from vinylpyrollidones and pyridines, acrylates and methacrylates. The base oil may be a refined naphthenic oil.
