Abstract

A lubricating oil composition comprises a lubricating oil and a minor proportion of an oil-soluble polyvalent metal basic salt of a sulphonic acid having the general formula (R3C)n.Ar(OH)m.SO3H, where Ar is an aromatic hydrocarbon radical which may be partially hydrogenated and/or alkylated provided no tertiary carbon atom is present in the alkyl radical, the R's are the same or different alkyl radicals, which do not contain a tertiary carbon atom, n is 1, 2, 3 or 4, and m is 0, 1, 2 or 3, the sum of n and m not exceeding the number of valencies of the radical Ar which are available for bearing substituent groups. The sulphonates may be prepared from benzene and its alkyl derivatives, such as the xylenes, ethyl benzene, styrene, durene, hemimelleitene and cumene, polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons such as naphthalene and anthracene and their alkyl derivatives, and phenols such as o-cresol xylenol, a - and b -naphthol, and mono-, di- and tri-hydroxy benzenes, e.g. phenol and catechol. The aromatic compound is alkylated (preferably with isobutylene or a polymer thereof) to introduce one or more alkyl groups R3C, sulphonated, and converted to polyvalent metal basic salt. The metal may be an alkaline earth metal, aluminium, iron, tin, zinc, cadmium, indium, cobalt or nickel. Example of salts which may be used are basic calcium tetra-tert. butyl naphthalene sulphonate and basic calcium dioctyl phenol sulphonate. The salts may be used in amounts of 0.05 to 10 per cent., preferably 0.2 to 1.5 per cent., by weight based on the whole composition. The lubricating oil may be oils distilled from paraffinic naphthenic, asphaltic or mixed base crudes; hydrogenated oils or white oils; synthetic oils prepared p by polymerization of olefins or by hydrogenation of oxides of carbon or coal or its products; organic esters; animal, vegetable or fish oils or their hydrogenated, polymerized or voltolized products. The compositions may contain solubilizing agents, preferably alcohols having eight or more carbon atoms, such as octyl, lauryl, cetyl, stearyl, heptadecyl alcohols, olefinic alcohols such as oleyl alcohol, alicyclic alcohols such as naphthenic alcohols, and alcohols containing aromatic groups such as phenyl-octyl alcohol and octadecylbenzyl alcohol. The compostion may also contain dyes, pour-point depressors, sludge dispersers, foam suppressors, anti-oxidants, thickeners, viscosity index improvers and oiliness agents. Compositions containing sulphonates not in accordance with the invention, which are also described, include those containing basic calcium salts of sulphonic acids of dinonyl naphthalene, di-dodecyl naphthalene, di-dodecyl phenol, dodecyl benzene, tetralin substituted with an alkyl group having 18 carbon atoms, and petroleum.
