Abstract

A grease having a dropping point above 500 F., an ASTM penetration at 77 F. of less than 400 and an acetic acid base number of at least 50 comprises by wt.: (a) 5-80 parts oil-soluble alkaline earth metal sulphonate, (b) 5-45 parts of an alkaline earth metal carbonate homogeneously dispersed in the grease and (c) 0À5-60 parts of a petroleum wax. Preferred components are (a) a calcium sulphonate, (b) CaCO 3 , (c) micro-crystalline wax. The grease may contain a non- volatile mineral oil or synthetic oil diluent (e.g. polyolefins, diesters, polyglycols or phosphorus acid esters). The grease may be used as a rust-inhibitor in the form of a 30-80 wt per cent solution in a volatile hydrocarbon solvent.
