A girdle, panty girdle or corselette comprising a body formed of a. plurality of elastic and/or inelastic panels, has supplementary elastic panels on the inner side of at least portions of the body panels and elastic reinforcing strips secured to the inner side of at least some of the supplementary panels and being diagonally disposed with respect to the garment, the stitching securing the strips to the supplementary panels does not extend through the body panels. As shown, a panty girdle comprises a front body panel 21, with an elastic or inelastic insert 32 which may be covered by lace or other inelastic material, and a rear body panel 22 reinforced by a. double thickness elastic or inelastic panel (40), Fig. 4 (not shown), supplementary elastic panels 34, 35 and elastic reinforcing strips 42, 43 and (46), (47), Fig. 4. In an alternative embodiment, a girdle, Figs. 7-9 (not shown), comprises a front panel (61) in two parts, each associated with a supplementary elastic panel (64<SP>1</SP>) carrying three reinforcing strips (66), elastic side panels (62) and rear side panels (70) connected to a rear centre panel (72). Pockets for stiffeners are provided at the seams between panels (70) and (72). An alternative rear portion for the girdle, Fig. 10 (not shown), comprises rear side panels (70a) with supplementary elastic panels (76) carrying reinforcing strips (78). This rear portion may be used with a front (Fig. 11, not shown) having no supplementary panels or reinforcing strips.
