Abstract
518,320. Foundation garments. ROBBINS, P. H. Aug. 22, 1938, No. 24695. Convention date, March 29. [Class 141] A foundation garment with elastic side portions has a pair of sets of elastic members attached to each side portion, for affording additional control to the figure, the sets of each pair being oppositely disposed with respect to the vertical centre of the side of the garment, and being arranged to act in directions other than lengthwise of the garment. As shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the garment comprises inelastic stiffened front and rear panels 23, 25 and elastic side panels 18, 19 to the inner faces of which are stitched front and rear sets of elastic tape-like members 27 ... 38, the garment also comprising upper and lower circumferential elastic straps 20, 21, and side stay means 22, 22a. The upper part of the rear panel 25 is provided with a slit 11 closable by a sliding-clasp fastener, and with a protecting flap 12. In a modification, the elastic tapes of each set are formed of different widths, and the side stay means extend throughout the length of the garment. In another modification, the garment comprises a brassiere portion. In a further modification also applied to a garment having a brassiere portion additional elastic tapes are stitched to the elastic side panels for controlling the abdomen. In another modification, Fig. 11, the garment 76 is provided with additional elastic tapes 82, 86, for controlling both the abdomen and the buttocks. In a still further modification, the elastic tapes are stitched to the outer face of the elastic side panels.
