Abstract
1,114,903. Latch fastenings. HEINRICH SUDHAUS SOHNE. 8 July, 1965 [9 July, 1964; 20 Jan., 1965], No. 28990/65. Heading E2A. A latch for a suitcase comprises a catch 1 adapted to be fastened to a suitcase lid 2 and a latch assembly adapted to be fitted to the body of the suitcase, the latch assembly comprising an operating device III adapted to be fitted externally and a retaining device II adapted to be fitted internally of the suitcase, the operating device comprising a slide 15 and a pin 30 which projects into housing 8, 9 of the retaining device, and which engages a retaining bolt 10 which is retained in the releasing position by a spring 11 and of which one end portion 32 is hook shaped and in use engages a free end portion 6 of the catch 1 in the fastening position. In one embodiment, Figs. 1 and 3, the bolt 10 is pivotally mounted on a collar 14 of the housing 8, 9 and is held in its releasing position by a lug 13 thereon engaging in an indentation 12 of the spring 11. The bolt is alternatively held in its fastening position by the lug 13 engaging an inclined portion of the spring. The spring 11 is so shaped that movement of the bolt from its releasing to its fastening position requires more force than the reverse movement. In a second embodiment, Fig. 6, the bolt 10 is slidable and is urged to its fastening position by a spring 31. The spring 11 has an indentation 12 which in the releasing position of the bolt 10 engages in a hole 13 in the housing to make it difficult for the bolt 10 to be slid to its fastening position. In each embodiment the operating device III comprises a plate to which the pin 30 is rivetted, the plate being slidably mounted on a baseplate 19 by passing tabs drawn out of the baseplate through slots in the plate and bending over the tabs. Sliding of the plate relative to the baseplate is prevented by a conventional locking device. In each embodiment as the bolt 10 moves to the releasing position from the fastening position a shoulder thereof engages the catch 1 to positively urge this section out of the housing 8, 9. The latches can be used for right hand or lefthand operation by reversing the bolts and repositioning the springs accordingly, and the catch 1 and housing 8, 9 are cranked so that they can be used on a suitcase having closure frames 35.
