A vehicle attachment for picking up sacks two at a time comprises a base frame 2 pivoted at 6 to an upright frame 4 which supports a pivotal gripping frame 8. The device may be attached to a masted lift-truck or the front loader arms of a tractor by bearing-shafts 16. Rams 30, 32 pivot the frames 4, 8, respectively. Plates 28, which may carry extensions 28a, bear against the tops of the sacks. Figs. 2-5 (not shown), illustrate the sequence of lifting operations in which the frame 8 is first lowered to engage the top of the sacks followed by a rearward tilting of the frame 4 so that a bar 22 is below the sacks.
