Abstract
A copolymer comprises 80 to 90% by weight of acrylic acid and/or methacrylic acid and 20 to 10% of an unsaturated sulphated oil. Suitable animal and vegetable oils are listed. The polymerization may be carried out in an aqueous medium containing an initiator, e.g. H2O2, lauroyl peroxide or ammonium, sodium or potassium persulphate and a chain transfer agent such as hydroxylamine or a salt thereof, e.g. hydroxylamine sulphate, mercaptoethanol, mercaptopropanol, thiodiglycol, thioglycollic acid, ascorbic acid and isoascorbic acid. The copolymer solutions produced are used for tanning leather, additional water and optionally a salt, e.g. NaCl, Na2SO4 or NaOCOCH3 being added (see Division C6). In examples copolymers of methacrylic acid, with and without acrylic acid, and sulphated castor, sperm, neats-foot, codfish or soybean oil are prepared.ALSO:A tanning liquor comprises an aqueous solution of a copolymer of 80 to 90% by weight of acrylic acid and/or methacrylic acid and 20 to 10% of a sulphated unsaturated oil. A salt, e.g. NaCl or Na2SO4, is included in the solution, unless the skin being treated has been previously tanned, e.g. chrome- or zirconium-tanned. After tanning with the copolymer solution the skin may be retanned conventionally. Suitable sulphated animal and vegetable oils are specified. The aqueous solution of the copolymer may be formed, from its components, in the presence of a polymerization initiator, such as hydrogen peroxide, lauroyl peroxide, ammonium, sodium or potassium persulphate, and, if desired, a chain-transfer agent, such as hydroxylamine, hydroxylamine sulphate, mercaptoethanol, mercaptopropanol, thiodiglycol, thioglycollic acid, ascorbic acid or isoascorbic acid.
