Abstract

1,111,496. Detecting fluid trace materials. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. Feb. 1, 1967 [March 29, 1966], No. 13837/66. Heading G1N. Trace materials that can be easily recognized by characteristic electron-capture-signals with an ionization gauge, are used to detect and identify fluids. Two such materials may be used together to provide readily distinguishable signals. This "labelling" is of particular use in detecting leaks and locating an interface between fluids (e. g. petrol and oil) being transported in sequence along a pipe. The fluids are sampled at intervals and passed through one or more chromatographic columns to the detector. The carrier gas is preferably argon with 10% methane or nitrogen. The detector comprises a simple ionisation chamber and may be pulsed to produce signals for controlling flowvalves or mixing pumps. Suitable labelling substances are polyhalogens. such as dichlorofluromethane and long chain halogens (several examples are given).
