Abstract

1291724 Pressure regulating system for gas chromatography PYE Ltd 27 Aug 1969 42586/ 69 Heading B1X [Also in Division G3] In a gas chromatograph apparatus having a chromatographic column 5, a restrictor 7, a mass detector 9, a pressurised carrier gas source 1, and a device (not shown) for injecting into the column samples of gas to be analysed, the flow rate to the detector 9 is maintained constant, despite possible fluctuations within column 5, by means of two pressure regulators 3 and 11, with the latter regulator being connected to the source 1 either through line 12 or through line 13, or alternatively, being connected to a further carrier gas source 15. The regulators are so matched that the pressure at the. outlet of regulator 11 is less than that at the outlet of regulator 3, with the regulators being subsequently adjustable to ensure a constant pressure at the point P in the flow path to the detector. The restrictor 7 can take the form of a capillary tube, a porous metal block or sinter or a partition having a small hole therein. If instead of the mass detector 9, which could take the form of a flame ionisation detector, it is desired to use a concentration detector such as a katharometer (16, Fig 2, not shown), the column 5 is connected to the source through regulator 3 whilst the regulator connected to the point P is provided with an atmosphere vent (17) instead of being connected to a carrier gas source.
