Abstract
1299799 Chromatographic sampling system VARIAN ASSOCIATES 22 June 1970 [24 June 1969] 30239/70 Heading B1X A sample to be chromatographically analysed, e.g. alveolar air containing ethanol, is sealed in a deformable metal capsule, e.g. of indium, and placed in chamber 13 of sampling device 3, cap 11 being then replaced. Carrier 'gas is meanwhile passing into the device through inlet 35 and directly out to the column through outlet 37. To introduce the sample, solenoid 27 is activated, causing slide valve 15 to move to the right, forcing tube 18 to puncture the capsule 14 (see Fig. 3). At the same time, inlet 35 is functionally separated from outlet 37 by O-ring 23, causing carrier gas to pass along bore 19 to the interior of ruptured capsule, thereby sweeping the sample out through channels 34, 42, 41 and 43 to outlet 37, and thence to the column.
