Abstract

1,060,323. Sampling fluids for analysis. BECKMAN INDUSTRIES Inc. Feb. 17, 1965 [Feb. 28, 1964 (2)], No. 6776/65. Heading B1L. An injection and vapourization device for inserting a fluid sample into a carrier gas for analysis, in for example, a gas chromatography column, comprises a heated housing 10 enclosing a chamber 25 in which is disposed a tubular member 21, the sample being injected by a syringe needle through a self sealing cap 18 into the tubular member 21, and the carrier gas entering through 34 and 33 being heated and flowing around the tubular member and through holes 35 to ensure complete volatilization of the sample and to sweep the sample through the tubular member for discharge into a chromatography column 6. A threaded plug 26 together with a threaded cap 27 aligns the inlet end of column 6 with the outlet end of the injection device. An inwardly projecting shoulder 23 supports the member 21 which has a flared portion 24 at the inlet end which slidably fits within the chamber. In a modification the inlet end of the chromatography column extends into the chamber, replacing the tubular member, so that the inlet end of the column is disposed against the injection end of the housing.
