Abstract

1,167,554. Gas chromatography. SCHOLVEN-CHEMIE A.G. 13 July, 1967 [16 July, 1966], No. 32357/67. Heading B1L. A specimen divider for gas chromatographs comprises a compensatory flow branch interposed between the main gas flow and one of the partial flow branches which is operable to vary the composition in the partial flow branches so as to compensate for the kinetic change in composition which occurs at the point of division of the main flow into the partial flow branches. Thus, sample is introduced at 4 into the carrier gas stream and the mixture is carried past mixing devices 6. 8 to nozzle 10 whence it passes down tube 14 and back up through annular space 18. A proportion of the gas stream is bled off at 16 and passes through capillary column 26 and thence to flame ionization detector 28. Of the gas which passes upwards through space 18. part is recycled through compensatory gap 12 under the suction effect created by the flow through nozzle 10; the remainder passes to expansion chamber 20, and through needle valve 22 to outlet 24. The dimensions of tube 14, nozzle 10, space 18 and gap 12 are determined empirically.
