Abstract

1393000 Gas separation LKB-PRODUKTER AB 9 Nov 1972 [10 Nov 1971] 51861/72 Heading B1L [Also in Division G3] A single or multi-stage molecular separator for receiving gas from a gas chromatography column and delivering it to the ion source of a mass spectrometer, comprises an evacuation chamber 2, Fig. 1, coaxial inlet and outlet nozzles 3, 5, and means 13, 14 for moving one of the nozzles axially relative to the other to adjust the spacing therebetween. In use, the molecules, mainly carrier gas molecules, of the gas stream flowing across the chamber 2 towards the outlet nozzle 5 are withdrawn by a pump (not shown) connected to the chamber 2, thereby increasing the concentration of the sample and also reducing the pressure of the gas to the pressure of operation of the spectrometer. If it is desired to reduce or increase the gas flow rate through a normal gas chromatography column or to use a capillary column, a shaft 13 is rotated to cause an eccentric 12 thereon to move a sleeve 14 and attached nozzle 3 axially, whereby the spacing between the nozzles is adjusted to suitably modify the pressure-reducing effect of the separator. For coarse adjustment, a locking screw 15 is slackened and the nozzle 3 is moved relative to the sleeve 14. The nozzles may be brought into contact to eliminate the pressure-reducing effect. The nozzle spacing may be adjusted, in use, in accordance with an output measurement signal. Instead of rotatable shaft 13, the adjustable nozzle may be moved by an axially displaceable rod arranged perpendicular or parallel to the nozzle. Sealing is provided by a sharp-edged ring 9 which presses metal membranes 7, 8 against silver seals 10, 11. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the sealing elements 7 to 11 are replaced by a silver seal (18) and a seal (17) of plastics material.
