Abstract

1420036 Mixing apparatus; liquid chromatography HEWLETT-PACKARD GmbH 12 Dec 1973 [28 Dec 1972] 57595/73 Headings B1C and B1H In an apparatus for mixing two separate liquid flows arriving under pressure at inlets 1 and 2, the liquids are forced through parallel apertured screens or grids 5 and 6 spaced apart by a distance not greater than one fifth of the largest lateral dimension of each grid and the resulting mixture formed by the resulting intermeshing jets in the central chamber passes out of outlet 4. The screens may be made from sintered metal and the casing 7, closed by means of a cover plate and bolts 8a, 8b, may have a groove on its inside wall which extends around the mixing chamber and is connected to the outlet 4, as shown. A series of the apparatuses may be connected in cascade manner for improved mixing, i.e. the flow from outlet 4 is divided into two flows these being fed to a second apparatus and so on. The apparatus may be used in an arrangement for the gradient elution in the chromatographic analysis of liquids, wherein two solvents, such as methyl alcohol and octane, are pumped through the apparatus and the proportion of one (methyl alcohol) is increased and the other decreased to maintain the rate of outflow constant. The outflow is then directed to a liquid chromatograph.
