Abstract

1,111,443. Sampling for gas chromatography. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd. 5 Aug., 1965 [10 Aug., 1964], No. 32418/64. Heading B1L. [Also in Division B8] A sample injection valve, particularly for use with gas chromatography column, comprises a chamber 1 having an inlet 4 and outlet 5 for sample liquid flowing through the valve and means 12, 8 for shutting-off the inlet and outlet from the the liquid in the chamber and for applying pressure to the trapped liquid in order to force it through a port 6. The means 12 for shutting-off the inlet 4 and outlet 5 is in the form of a piston washer 12 connected by a nod 18 to a piston 8 located in a second chamber 2 and sealed therewith by means of a diaphragm 13. The port 6 is provided with a non-return valve 7. In operation, the sampling liquid if fed continuously through the inlet 4, into the chamber 1, and out via the outlet 5. When it is desired to feed a sample into a chromatographic column connected to a pipe 16, compressed air is fed through a port 14 to act in the piston 8 and thereby force the liquid in the chamber 1 passed the valve 7 where it is carried by a liquid fed at 17 into the pipe 16, to the column. In a modification the piston may be moved either manually or electromagnetically instead of by compressed air.
