Abstract
1,254,684. Chromatography. FOXBORO CO. 20 April, 1970 [2 June, 1969], No. 18670/ 70. Heading B1X. [Also in Division G1 In chromatographic apparatus the time t 2 of emergence from the column of a particular component of interest is predicted from the time t 1 taken for a reference fluid to pass through the column, the ratio of the times t 1 and t 2 being assumed constant. For analysing a person's breath for ethanol a suitable carrier gas is helium and a suitable reference fluid is acetaldehyde which produces a negative peak. In Fig. 1, the output from a thermal conductivity detector 30 is amplified and fed to a recorder 40 through an integrator 36 which is controlled by a "window" pulse to integrate the ethanol peak. The time of starting and duration of the window pulse are respectively proportional to the time of starting and duration of the acetaldehyde peak. Correction for base-line drift is made.
