Abstract
Magnesium or magnesium-base alloys are heated in a nitriding atmosphere to produce a superficial nitride layer which confers corrosion resistance. The atmosphere may be pure nitrogen or ammonia; preferred treatment conditions are given. The invention relates particularly to the protection of structural parts in gas-cooled nuclear reactors, when nitriding may be effected by including a proportion of nitrogen in the coolant gas; the method may also be used to facilitate thermal treatment of magnesium and its alloys.
