Abstract

In the hot working of metals, particularly the extrusion of steel, there is used as a lubricant a water-soluble salt whose melting point is below the working temperature and which is heated before use to at least its transition point. The salt may be sodium or potassium carbonate, barium chloride or alkali acetates. To this salt may be added magnesium oxide and potassium chromate. The salt may be mixed with sodium nitrate, compacted and sintered. After extrusion the salt residue is removed by washing in water.
