Abstract
1,135,147. Crucibles. BROWN, BOVERI & CO. Ltd. 21 July, 1967 [23 July, 1966], No. 33655/67. Heading F4B. A frit mixed with water is applied e.g. by brushing or spraying to seal an unsintered rammed mass lining of a furnace crucible, the melting temperature of the frit being below the melting temperature of the metal to be treated in the crucible. The frit, after application, is heated, causing it to liquefy and diffuse into the rammed mass. For sealing crucibles used for heating aluminium a frit composed of sodiumpotassium-silicate or sodium-potassium-boronsilicate is used whereas in crucibles for melting , other non-ferrous metals e.g. copper or copper alloys an oxide of one or more of the metals copper, tin, zinc, lead, nickel is additionally added. For heating iron and iron alloys, oxides of the metals to be melted in the crucible e.g. haematite are added to the frit. The frit may contain further additives such as metals of the alkali or akaline earth group e.g. lithium fluoride and a holding medium e.g. clay.
