Abstract

Ferroniobium is produced by smelting niobium concentrates with aluminium at a temperature of at least 1700‹C., which process is carried out most conveniently in an electric furnace. A source of iron, usually iron ore or scrap, and a flux can also be included in the melt. Scrap and niobium concentrates may both, if desired, be preliminarily melted in the electric furnace. After melting and termination of reduction, the slag is post-reduced by adding a small amount of aluminium to the slag surface, and a few minutes allowed for beads of metal to separate from the slag. The furnace is then tapped, transfer of metal out of the slag being further improved by slag-metal inter-mixing during tapping.
