Abstract
1,130,828. Refining steel. TSENTRALNY NAUCHNO-ISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUT CHERNOI METALLURGII IM. I. P. BARDINA. Feb.11, 1966, No.6059/66. Heading C7D. Basic open hearth or electric arc furnace steel, such as produced on melting a charge of steel scrap, pig iron and coke and oxidizing the bath by blowing, is refined to reduce oxide inclusions by tapping the heat into a ladle containing basic synthetic slag, e. g. comprising 38 to 45% Al 2 O 3 , 50 to 55% CaO, up to 5% SiO 2 up to 6% MgO and up to 1% FeO heated to 1700‹ C, and adding oxidizers, such as iron and /or manganese ore in the amount 0.05 to 0À5% by weight of the heat. Prior to tapping, Fe-Cr for alloying and iron ore may be added to the oxidized heat. Fe-Si and Fe-Mn may be added with the oxidizers. After oxidizing refining using the basic slag, the melt may be deoxidized with Al.
