Abstract

1,105,300. Mechanical seals. BURMAH OIL TRADING Ltd. 11 March, 1966 [14 Dec., 1964], No. 50731/64. Heading F2B The mechanical seal described and claimed in Specification 1,023,022 is modified by the addition of secondary spring means (50, Fig. 1) compressed between the sealing member (12) and the sleeve (7) and acting to apply continuously a force urging the sealing member (12) into contact with the fixed seal face (17) so that although the load due to the primary spring (10) is automatically relieved in proportion to the differential across the seal, the overall spring force acting on the seal faces (16, 17) is never completely relieved. The secondary spring means (50) may be coil springs in recesses (52) in the sleeve (7) or may be a single coil or wave spring or a number of wave springs.
