Abstract

1,131,493. Mechanical seals. FILTON Ltd. 28 Jan., 1966 [1 Feb., 1965], No. 4339/65. Heading F2B. In a mechanical seal for a rotary shaft 8 and comprising a rotary seal ring 5 in facial sealing contact with a seating ring 1, the rings 1 and 5 are each provided with two faces 4b, 4c and 6a, 6b respectively adapted to form sealing faces and are reversible whereby either of two pairs of sealing faces may be used. The seat ring 1 comprises a fixed carrier ring 2 and two seal rings 4, 4a on opposite sides of the ring 2 having optically flat seal faces 4b, 4c. The rotary ring 5 has optically flat seal faces 6a, 6b at each end and has pins 6 engaging slots 9 in a housing 10 driven from the shaft by a ring 15 secured to the shaft by a grub screw 18 and having pins 16 engaging slots 17 in the housing. Springs 14 urge the housing 10 and the ring 5, which is sealed to the shaft by an 0-ring 7, towards the ring 1. As shown, the seal faces 4b and 6a are operative. If and when wear occurs the other two seal faces 4c and 6b may be used by axially reversing the rings 1 and 5. The fixed seal rings 4, 4a may be of glass-filled P.T.F.E. and the rotary seal ring may be of stainless steel.
