Abstract

1,104,247. Casting processes. H. J. DAUSSAN. 1 Nov., 1965 [4 Nov., 1964], No. 46045/65. Heading B3F. In a process of casting metal ingots means are provided to control the solidification of the ingot to reduce segregation therein. An annular metal disc B, is positioned within the top A of an ingot mould. The disc B becomes welded to the poured metal when it reaches the level of the disc. A hollow perforated plug member C containing a charge of reactive material D is placed over the aperture 1 in the disc and reaction takes place between the material D and the gases produced in the agitating melt to kill the effervescence. The agitated molten metal enters the plug and freezes in the apertures 7 of the upper disc forming plug-like masses 21. The disc B may be supported on the mould by hooks or by external means. The perforated plug may be in the form of two dished members 3 and 4 welded together each perforated or by one perforated dished member 20 closed at the bottom by a destructible partition 9. The mould may be top or bottom poured. A mould for forming the dished plugs is described the mould unit being dipped into a melt the metal freezing thereon. When removed from the melt the air trapped in blind holes in the mould expands to blow holes in the metal disc formed on the mould member, thus producing the perforations. Materials suitable as a reactive agent include calcic. substances such as calcium ferrosilicate, exothermic agents such as fibrous organic materials, e.g. sawdust, paper pulp and substances which kill effervescene such as glass wool or fibre.
