Abstract

906,478. Casting processes. DAUSSAN, H. J. Oct. 26, 1960 [Oct. 28, 1959; May 31, 1960; July 2, 1960; Aug. 26, 1960], No. 36707/60. Class 83 (1). The head of an ingot is kept liquid by immersing in a peripheral portion a substance which will create an exothermic effect and be decomposed by the molten metal and evolve gases to agitate the melt. One form of device for supporting in the top of the mould L, Figs. 1, 2, comprises a metal frame A supporting plates B comprising an upper member 8 of an inert material such as a mixture of sawdust or cellulose fibres or waste products bound with sodium silicate, and a bottom member 9 of an active material which will disintegrate under heat. The active material may comprise, for example, wood fibres, sawdust, or cellulose waste, sand, an aqueous solution of sodium silicate, powdered sodium carbonate, manganese dioxide, and ferro-silicon, ferro-siliconaluminium or other reducing metals or alloys. The active members may be formed on wire netting, either singly, Fig. 17, or by mounting on a netting band, Fig. 12. Alternatively small members B3, Figs. 6 and 7, may be suspended from bars 36. A thin sheet metal cover T is pierced by the casting jet.
