In order to prevent surging in a multi-stage contra-rotating compressor supplying air to the combustion chamber 12 of an engine, air is vented to atmosphere through circumferentially-spaced ports 14, at least one aperture 15 and a manually or automatically controlled valve 17. The ports 14 may be arranged at more than one compressor stage. A pair of seals 19, 20 may be of the labyrinth type.
