Abstract

268,903. Fitzgerald, J. J. Jan. 23, 1926. Machines supported by direct fluid pressure apparatus; propelling.-An aircraft 10 is lifted straight up into the air by means of a pair of " air turbines " comprising a fixed casing 11 and sets of vanes 15, 16 carried respectively by a cylinder 12 and a shaft 17. The cylinder and shaft are driven in opposite senses by a motor and cause air to be drawn in through an opening 24 and compressed in the cylinder. When the pressure within the cylinder reaches a predetermined value the vanes 16 move the shaft 17 upwards against a spring 23 allowing air to escape through an opening 25. The Specification includes a statement of the theory of operation.
