Abstract

1,103,484. Melt-spinning polyamides. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 13 May, 1965 [28 May, 1964], No. 22054/64. Heading B5B. An at least partially oriented polyamide yarn which in the freshly drawn state substantially free from moisture and in a relaxed condition is stable in the presence of moisture and heat is produced by melt-spinning a polyamide such as polyhexamethylene adipamide to form filaments, cooling and solidifying the filaments, orienting them in air under substantially moisture-free conditions and winding them up on to a package as a yarn, the usual steps of passing the filaments through a steam conditioning tube and applying an aqueous finish to the filaments being omitted. The resulting yarn has a boiling water shrinkage of less than 1%. The draw ratio used in the orientation step may be 1À9. The filaments after cooling may have a non-aqueous finish applied to them and may then be drawn between two sets of rolls in a known manner. The yarn may pass around a snubbing pin during its passage from one set of draw rolls to the other. The yarn may be drawn by means of a high velocity stream of air instead of by draw rolls.
