1346207 Water-soluble polyvinyl alcohol fibres KURARAY CO Ltd 20 Aug 1971 [22 Aug 1970] 39251/71 Heading B5B An oriented synthetic polyvinyl alcohol fibre soluble in water at a temperature not higher than 30‹ C. has a degree of polymerization of from 400-1000, a degree of saponification of from 80-97 %, a sonic modulus of from 3À0 Î 10<SP>11</SP> to 1À0 x 10<SP>11</SP> dynes/em.<SP>2</SP>, a degree of crystallinity of from 35-10%, a crystallite length along the fibre axis of from 55-30Š and a breadth at the half-maximum intensity of the interference profile in the small-angle X-ray scattering of from 45-25 minutes. Preferably, the degree of polymerization is from 500-800, the degree of saponification is from 85-95%, and the crystallite length is from 50-30Š. Such fibres may be made by forming a solution of polyvinyl alcohol having a degree of saponification of from 80- 97% and a degree of polymerization of from 400-1000 having a water content of from 33- 70%; and spinning said solution at 95 to 110‹ C. through a spinning nozzle into a spinning tube, collecting the spun fibre at a rate of up to 40 times the speed at which the solution leaves the spinning nozzle; drying the resulting spun fibres; and hot-drawing the dried fibre at 110- 180‹ C. to a total draw ratio of 1À5 to 6 times. Preferably, the said spun fibre solution is collected on a take-up roll having a linear speed of from 20 to 40 times that of the solution leaving the nozzle.
