Abstract
1307311 Interlaced yarn EI DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 24 Feb 1970 [24 Feb 1969 9 Dec 1969] 8941/70 Headings D1F and D1W A compact interlaced yarn suitable for warp in automatic shuttle looms without size or twist consists of continuous filaments interlaced in a coherent structure and characterised, when evaluated by the 'Automatic Pin Drop Counter' test described in the specification, by having a value for X' + O-' in centimetres of less than 0.17 <SP>B</SP>/N + 4 and a coefficient of variation O-' / X' of less than 0.039d + 0.33, where X' is the average of 100 APDC readings of a representative sample after backwinding, O-' is the standard deviation of the APDC readings, B is the breaking strength of the yarn in grams, N is the number of filaments and d is the denier per filament, the yarn having also a breaking strength of at least 4N and at least 50% of the filaments having strengths of at least 2 grams per denier. The yarn is produced by a process comprising feeding a group of at least 7 filaments under a tension between 0.1 and 0.4 grams per denier through the intersecting streams formed by jetting gas under a pressure of 60-100 pounds per square inch gauge through a pair of adjacent orifices, which orifices are arranged so that the streams are inclined towards each other and lie in a plane which is at an angle of 45‹ to 90‹, preferably 60‹ to 90‹ to the direction of yarn travel, a finish being applied to the filaments prior to passage through the intersecting streams to provide between 0.3 and 3% by weight of finish non-volatiles on the filaments, and the yarn being rapidly traversed from side to side so that the filaments are oscillated in the streams, the interlaced yarn being wound up. The rapid traversing motion may be imparted to the yarn by the traversing mechanism of the yarn wind-up or pneumatically as by employing pairs of jets in tandem. The filaments may be made of polyethylene terephthalate or polyhexamethalene adipamide. Several examples are given of suitable finish compositions and processing conditions.
