Abstract
<PICT:0922485/IV(a)/1> Fibre-forming liquids are wet-spun by extruding the liquid, through a spinning jet face having an imperforate area at or adjacent to its centre, into a coagulant liquid, and simultaneously directing a separate stream of the same or different coagulant liquid towards the central imperforate area. The coagulant liquid into which the fibre-forming liquid is extruded may be a solution, e.g. an aqueous solution of an inorganic salt, and the separate stream may be a weaker solution of the same compound or may be the solvent component only of the solution. The separate stream of coagulant may be fed perpendicularly to the central imperforate area of the jet face, e.g. through a pipe ending in a bell-shaped mouth which pipe extends through the bundle of freshly-spun filaments with the mouth directly over the central imperforate area of the jet face. Alternatively, as shown in the drawing, the separate supply of a coagulant liquid may be fed via pipe 5, annular conduit 4 and spouts 6 along the radial imperforate areas of the face of the jet 1 between the radial perforated areas of the jet face (shown in the drawing as shaded areas) to the imperforate area in the centre of the jet face. In the example, a 12,5% solution of polyacrylonitrile in a 51% aqueous sodium thiocyanate solution is extruded into an 11% aqueous sodium thiocyanate solution through a spinning jet of the type described above and water or a 2% aqueous sodium thiocyanate solution is fed to the central area of the jet face through the spouts 6. The invention makes possible higher spinning speeds and improved fibre quality.
