In the passage of open-width textile material through a pressure chamber 1, in which it is subjected to steam, the inlet and outlet are sealed by means of hydraulic or pneumatic sealing membranes 2, the pressure of which is adjustable. The adjusting mechanism comprises a double-acting cylinder 8, the piston 12 of which is acted upon on the one side by the internal pressure in the chamber 1 by means of a pipe 14, and on the other side acts on the pressure medium of the sealing membranes by means of a return pipe 9 of a circulatory system of the medium. The necessary excess pressure at the membranes is produced by additional pressure on the piston rod, e.g. by superposed weights or by means of a pneumatic pressure. Compensatory adjustments to the pressure at the membranes are effected by a throttle 10 disposed in the return pipe 9 and controlled by variations in the tension of the material passing through the chamber 1. The variation in tension is communicated to the throttle by means of a darcer-roll 21 and lever 23. The piston rod is preferably hollow and is connected to a condensing unit to remove condensate forming on the upper surface of the piston 12. The circulatory system for the pressure medium includes a cooling system 11.
