Abstract

545,346. Printing-machines. HUBER, Inc., J. M. May 5, 1941, No. 5833. Convention date, May 18, 1940. [Class 100 (ii)] In a letterpress printing machine employing ink solid at normal press-room temperatures, the printing cylinder and some of the ink distributing rollers are hollow and means are provided for circulating hot liquid in parallel streams through the cylinder and rollers and through a fountain heating device to maintain the ink in liquid condition at a substantially constant temperature. At each side of the press is a hot fluid supply pipe 12, 13, Figs. 1 and 2, connected by a cross header 11 to a supply line 14, and an exhaust pipe 22, 23 connected by a cross header 21 to an exhaust line 24. The pipe 12 connects by branches 15, 16, 17 to one end of a heating pipe or coil 10 in a water jacket J provided for the ink fountain F, to one end of the hollow distributing drum R and to one end of the printing cylinder P, the other ends of these parts 10, R and P connecting through branches 25, 26, 27 to the exhaust pipe 22. The fountain roller R 4 and distributing drum R 1 are similarly connected to the pipes 13, 23 so that the flow takes place through these parts in the opposite direction. The rate of flow is controlled by valves 31 in the branch pipes to the exhaust pipes 22, 23. In one form of apparatus for supplying hot liquid, Fig. 3, the exhaust line 24 is connected to a tank T from which the liquid is supplied by a pump B to the line 14. The pressure of the liquid is determined by the height of liquid in a tank T<SP>1</SP> connected by a pipe 37 to the tank T and a liquid supply pipe 39 is also connected to the pipe 37. The liquid in the tank T is heated by a steam coil 32 supplied through a valve 36 controlled by a thermostat 35. In another form of heater, steam is introduced directly into the tank T and in a further form the tank is heated by a burner, the gases from which pass through pipes in the tank. Higher working pressures may be used by substituting for the tank T\ a weighted piston in a cylinder connected to the pipe 37. The Specification, as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also an arrangement in which the liquid in the tank is vaporized and, instead of hot liquid, a mixture of vapour and air circulates through the printing cylinder, and inking apparatus. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
