Abstract

A retort for producing metallurgical heat treatment gas comprises an annular inlet chamber and a co-axial inner chamber containing a catalyst, e.g. a -alumina containing 6% to 8% NiO by weight, and means for effecting at least one change of direction of gas flow in the retort between the inlet chamber, where the gas is heated, and the inner chamber. Town's gas and air in the ratio 2:1 enters at 4 and passes between cylinders 1,2, its direction being reversed by packing 7 to pass between cylinders 2,3, which both contain catalyst. A plate 8 serves to reverse the gas flow again through the cylinder 3 to an outlet 5. The whole retort may be filled with catalyst. <FORM:0932745/III/1>
