[Also in Division F2] Apparatus for heating and advancing yarns, e.g. in a spinning frame, comprises an internally heated shell roll 1, providing a yarn-engaging surface 6 maintained at a temperature upwards of 200‹C and a yarn-restraining shoulder 7. The roll is supported by an axle 2 by which it is driven from an electric motor (not shown) to rotate at a speed exceeding 6000 r.p.m. The axle 2 is journalled in bearings 4 and 5 retained in a stationary housing 3 and carries mechanical seals 20, 21, and 25, 26, residing in recesses 22, 23, and 27, 28, to confine a coolant-lubricant within the housing as it passes from inlet 24 to outlet 29. Heating vapour, e.g. saturated steam under a pressure slightly less than that of the lubricant, passes from supply conduit 19, annular inlet 18, ports 17, passageway 16 and into the shell 1. Condensate formed on the internal sloping surface of the shell is urged'centrifugally towards and into a groove 8 at 9, whence it passes through orifices 15 enclosed by a stationary plenum 10 and is carried away by a drain 13 which may be connected to a suction tube. The plenum is separated from shoulder 7 by a clearance gap within which is a labyrinth composed of screw threads 12 which act as vanes to pump air into the plenum and thereby check seeping of the condensate. In another apparatus intended for low pressure service, Fig. 2 (not shown) a simplified structure comprises a prelubricated, sealed ball-bearing (replacing bearing 5) and seals 21, 26, housed in opposed relationship in an enlarged recess 23 serially connected to a recess 22 by a duct, the shell 1 comprises an annular steam chamber and the axle 2 is integral with the armature shaft of a driving motor.
