Abstract

749,949. Lubricating. FIAT SOC. PER AZIONI. May 21, 1954 [June 17, 1953], No. 15052/54. Class 12 (3). A bearing 6 for a shaft 1 rotating at high speed is lubricated by means of an impeller 15 with blades 16, which is rotated with the inner race 4 of the bearing and draws lubricant by channels 13, 12a through the bearing, the lubricant being fed from an outer source at a pressure not exceeding 0.5 atmospheres above atmospheric pressure. A ring 10 bearing against the inner race 4 is surrounded by a stationary cover 11 and lubricant is prevented from escaping between the ring and cover by the provision of resilient segments 18, 19 seated in grooves in the ring 10. Between the segments is a groove 21 communicating through channels 22, 24 with an outlet. In a modification the bearing has two rows of balls and sealing means for preventing escape of lubricant is provided on both sides of the bearing. The lubricant supplied to the bearing is maintained at a constant pressure of about 0.5 atmospheres above atmospheric pressure by means shown in Fig. 3. Oil from a reservoir 50 is pumped to a conduit 52 at a pressure of about 4 atmospheres. Some oil is drawn to branch conduits 53, 54 for lubricating or other purposes, and some oil passes through a self-adjusting valve 45 which maintains a constant pressure in the oil through the conduit 56 leading to the bearing. An oil reflux conduit 58 leads oil back to the reservoir 50.
