A ship has a sternframe structure including a sternframe 10, a boss 13 located in the sternframe and having a gland housing on its inner end, a gland 18 mounted in or on the housing to engage the propeller shaft 15 to form a water or oil-tight seal, and a recess within the aft peak tank in the form of a (conical) chamber 20 which is open to the ship and accessible for inspection of the propeller shaft, but closed to the sea or lubricating oil (in a reservoir 16) in the boss 13 by the gland 18.
