Abstract

1279800 Shaft seals WAUKESHA BEARINGS CORP 19 April 1971 [12 Feb 1970] 21589/71 Heading F2B A seal assembly for the forward end of a ship's stern tube comprises an annular casing 17 having an annular pocket 32 for a lip seal 25, a restricted inlet 38 and means 53 for drawing oil from the stern tube through the restricted inlet and pocket to provide an oil pressure in the pocket which is lower than that in the stern tube. The casing 17 is secured to the stern tube by a flange 18 and the lip seal of, for example, rubber or a copolymer of butadiene and acrylonitrile such as Buna N bears on a shaft liner 20. The oil pressure in the stern tube (10), Fig. 1 (not shown), is provided by a head tank (42) and the restricted inlet to the pocket 32 from the stern tube is provided by a floating ring 35 of bronze or plastics which is loosely held by pins 36 in a pocket 33 to create a clearance 38. The lip seal assembly (16) at the aft end of the stern tube is subjected to the head pressure which is maintained at a value slightly in excess of the sea water pressure. The lip seal 29 at the forward end of the stern tube is subjected to the reduced oil pressure provided by the restriction and the pump 53 which continuously returns the oil to the higher pressure oil system of the stern tube.
