Abstract

1379967 Stern frame assembly MOBIL OIL CORP 25 July 1972 [20 Oct 1971] 34764/72 Headings B7S and B7V [Also in Division F2] In a marine propulsion assembly propeller shaft 8 extends through cylindrical journal 14, an annular space forms an oil passageway between the shaft and the journal and retaining nut 10 holds drive ring 6 against thrust surface 8a on the shaft. The drive ring is spaced apart from the rear end of the cylindrical journal to permit flow of oil and is fastened by bolts 50 to the rear end of hub 4 of the propeller. Bearing 12 is between the hub and the journal and seal 18 forward of the bearing is positioned between the hub and stern frame 16 to exclude sea water from the bearing. The seal comprises interconnected labyrinth passageways 36, 40 between the stationary 32 and moving 30 surfaces of the seal, which are out of rubbing contact with one another and air or fresh water is injected through passage 42 into the intermediate part of the labyrinth. In the embodiment shown the journal comprises a cylindrical stern tube which is an extension of the stern frame.
