Abstract

1,032,427. Bearings; seals. ALTAIR ENGINEERING & MARINE Ltd. July 10, 1964 [July 10, 1963], No. 27298/63. Headings F2A and F2B. [Also in Division B7] A method of mounting a propeller shaft 1 within a stern tube 4 of a boat comprises a rearwardly disposed bearing sleeve 2 mounted in a plastics bearing 5, a forwardly disposed bearing sleeve 3 mounted within a set of opposed thrust bearings 7, the arrangement being such that any thrust on the propeller shaft is transmitted through the thrust bearings 7 and stern tube 4 to the hull of the boat. As shown, bearing sleeve 2, e.g. a shrunk-on stainless steel bearing, is mounted within a self-lubricating plastics bearing, e.g. nylon or P.T.F.E. Bearing sleeve 3 is mounted within a forwardly disposed bearing assembly 3b and runs in thrust bearings 7 situated in the enlarged diameter 4a of stern tube 4. A carbon thrust seal abuts flange 3a of bearing 3 and an 0-ring seal 11 abuts the stern tube such that lubricant arranged between the bearing sleeves cannot leak past bearing 3.
