Abstract

1,009,254. Bearings. O. F. HEFFT. June 18, 1964 [June 28, 1963], No. 25903/63. Heading F2A. In a thrust block bearings 5, 9 support a thrust shaft 2 secured to a marine propeller shaft 1, bearing 5 being restrained from axial movement in one axial direction and bearing 9 from movement in the other. The bearings 5, 9 are restrained by shoulders 11, 13 respectively and also engage shoulders 4 of shaft 2 and 7 of member 8 respectively. The housing part 16 is screw-threaded on to the housing part 10 so that the distance between bearings 5, 9 may be readjusted after wear. Oil seals 18, 19 retain lubricant in the bearings. A stuffing box 26 secured to the housing or integral with part of the housing surrounds the propeller shaft. A resiliently mounted prime mover drives through a splined coupling, one or more universal couplings 14, and member 8. Member 8, shaft 2 and shaft 1 are secured together by set screw 21. In another embodiment the bearings are taper roller bearings, shoulder 7 is replaced by a nut abutting the inner race of one bearing and screw-threaded to shaft 2 to adjust the distance between the bearings.
