A vessel (10), Fig. 2 (not shown) for underwater observation of marine life comprises a compartment (15) having viewing ports (20) below the water line (WL) surrounded by a structure (26) on which sea bottom conditions are simulated and an outer limit structure (27) which confines travel of marine life. Access to the underwater viewing compartment (15) is by stairs (17) or ladderway (14) from platform (11) which includes multiple watertight compartments giving a reserve of buoyancy and which provides servicing facilities (13). The vessel can be towed or moored from fittings (32).
