A fire extinguisher of the type comprising a container 10 to hold extinguishing powder, a head cap 12 which can be screwed on to the container, a gas cartridge 20 attached to 12 having a closure rupturable by striker 23 and a gas tube 22 mounted on 12 to conduct gas from 20 to the bottom of 10, is characterised in that both cartridge 20 and gas tube 22 are connected to a fitting 16 which can rotate in relation to head cap 12 when 12 is screwed into the container, thus minimising strain on the gas tube during assembly. In addition cartridge 20 may be provided with external fins, or gas tube 22 may be tied to 20 by tight fitting sleeve 27 provided with fins 28 to resist rotation.
