Abstract
A bath for depositing Pt on an active surface, e.g. of Ni, Ni alloy, graphite, Fe, Cu, Mo, Ag, Ta, Ti, or glass, plastic or ceramic first rendered active with a Pt or Pd coating, consists of an aqueous alkaline solution containing 2 to 20 g/l Pt as Pt-IV hydroxide e.g. Na2 Pt(OH)6, 0.1 to 1 g/l hydrazine and sufficient alkali metal hydroxide e.g. NaOH to give a pH of at least 8. Up to 1 mol/l of soluble, compatible N-containing stabilizer may be included, e.g. the sodium salt of E.D.T.A., quinoline, sulphamate ion, preferably 0.5 to 45 g/l ethylamine. For depositing Pt alloys the bath contains at least 0.01 mol/l stabilizer and up to 20% Rh and/or 10% each of Ir and/or Ru by weight of the Pt content. The hydrazine may be added as hydrate, sulphate or chloride, and may be introduced into the bath on the surface to be coated. The reduction is autocatalytic. The invention is applicable to producing catalytically active deposits of Pt on a powder compact of Ni or graphite e.g. a porous graphite disc for a methanol-oxygen fuel cell anode.
