Abstract

An aqueous alkaline solution for removing copper from and passivating ferrous metal surfaces, e.g. boiler tubes comprises a ferric or ferrous chelate of an amino - or polyamine polyacetic or polypropionic acid salt of one of the group consisting of ammonia, an aliphatic amine or a hydroxy aliphatic amine. The action takes place in the presence of an oxidizing agent which may be hydrogen peroxide or nitrites, permanganates, persulphates or perchlorates of ammonia or alkali metals or a gas, e.g. nitrogen tetraoxide, oxygen or air, which is bubbled through the solution. The solution may also contain an inhibitor, e.g. thioethylamine
