Abstract

1,091,500. Electrostatic precipitators. KOPPERS CO. Inc. June 10, 1966 [June 11, 1965], No. 26083/66. Heading H2H. In an electrostatic precipitator, the working potential across the electrodes is periodically and momentarily increased by pulses and the voltage is adjusted according to the presence or absence of sparking in the precipitator. The working voltage across the electrodes 10, 11 is supplied from a variable autotransformer 17 through a rectifier 12 and high-frequency blocking inductor 13. The pulses are generated from a voltage source V1 passed through periodically closed contacts 35A and amplifiers 37, 39 to a switching tube 38 thus causing a pulse to be delivered via a transformer 40 and capacitor 41 to the electrodes. A similar current from source V2 may supply pulses of differing magnitude. Sparkover is detected by a unit 31 which through a relay 50, 50A and relays 35, 80 periodically energized through timing contacts 32, 76 prevents the periodic raising of the working potential by motor 20 by opening contacts 60A. The direction of the motor 20 is reversed if the pulses of lower magnitude from source V2 also cause sparkover by the simultaneous closure of contacts 60B, 90B. In an alternative arrangement the sources 36, 75 may each produce a short wave train of 50 kc/s. or more.
