Abstract
1478303 D.C.-D.C. converters CONTROSION ELECTROSTATIC Ltd 12 June 1974 [19 June 1973 17 Sept 1973] 29083/73 and 43448/73 Heading H2F In electrostatic coating apparatus, a high voltage generator comprises control means, such as a piezo electric transformer, coupled via a voltage-multiplying rectifier H to an electrode (not shown) of the electrostatic coating apparatus. The arrangement is preferably such that as the coating electrode is moved towards an earthed point, the output voltage and the output current become reduced to zero thus preventing sparking. The power supply is applicable for use with an electrostatic spray gun or electrostatic fluid bed apparatus. As described, the 50 Hz mains are connected at 100, 101 and feed a transformer 105. When switch 112 is closed, a relay 110 may be energized from a reed switch 111 on the spray gun so as to close contacts 114 and energize rectifier 115, the output of which is regulated by transistor 122 and Zener diode 123. The regulated output feeds the oscillator S comprising a transistor amplifier coupled via a transformer 142 to input electrodes C, D of a piezo electric transformer, output electrodes of which are coupled via the voltage-multiplying rectifier H to the coating electrode (not shown). The output voltage may be monitored at 158; a further electrode 148 feeding a neon indicator. The piezo electrode transformer is preferably of lead titanium zirconate or a barium titanate and may be mounted in the gun. Fig. 6 (not shown) shows the relationship between output voltage, output current and electrode/earth separation. Fig. 4 (not shown) relates to a plastics box containing a printed circuit power supply including the piezo electric transformer, mounted on the side of a further plastics box containing the voltage multiplying rectifier.
