Abstract
1445361 Electrostatic precipitators HIGH VOLTAGE ENG CORP 15 Aug 1973 [17 Aug 1972] 38564/73 Heading B2J [Also in Division H2] An electrostatic precipitator is energised from an a.c. source 12 by way of a transformer 14 and a rectifier 16, which energisation establishes a substantially uniform d.c. field between earthed collecting electrodes 18 and wire discharge electrodes. The supply circuit also includes a pulse generator 20, constituted by a system of capacitors and inductors and a switch 22, by means of which a continuous repetition of high voltage pulses may be superimposed upon the d.c. operating voltage of the precipitator. The resulting pulsed field serves to electrically charge particles in the gas stream passing through the precipitator, which charged particles are then attracted to the collecting electrodes 18. The pulse potential is at least 10% of the underlying d.c. operating potential, and the pulses may have a pulse width of between one nanosecond and one millisecond, the repetition rate being at least several hundred pulses per second. It is stated that the collection efficiency of a standard precipitator may be improved by such a supply arrangement.
